Oak Savanna Sanctuary is a 220-acre parcel located 3 miles southeast of Calvin in Hughes County, OK. This peaceful property has a buffer of wooded ridges surrounding it to the north, east and south with a drainage that flows to the west into Salt Creek. The entry to the property is at the end of a quiet public road with private access that extends through a neighboring property along the section line before angling southwest near its north boundary. A natural gas well is located on the property, but production activity is typically limited to an occasional inspection of the wellhead or emptying of a saltwater tank. In addition, the gas producer maintains an excellent gravel road to the well that provides all-season access with no required maintenance on your part. Other than the establishment of a food plot and placement of a feeder, the property has seen very little human activity. As the name implies, this ranch has a nice example of post oak savanna characterized by scattered oaks with a strong undergrowth of native grass and a healthy mix of forbs. Savannas are beneficial to wildlife because the diversity of native species provides a dependable year-round source of forage and acorns. That combined with the flow of fresh water through the large creek on the property creates an ideal natural setting for whitetails. Additionally, there is a 4.5 acre lake site on the east side of the property that we have identified if a larger lake is desired.
