When the O'Byrne family, the original name, was getting estblished in this part of Texas, the matriarch of the family, Byron Bruce O'Byrne, a stone mason in Texas, was building some of the original stone Court Houses in Texas and in time purchased this land in Mitchell County. When this ranch was esbablished, the railroad had just come to Colorado City, Texas, and the West was yet to be won. Barbed wire was just being patented by the Ellwood Family, another early ranching family in Mitchell County, who established the Spade Ranch. Cattle drives, Native Americans, Settlers, and hardships were a way of life in Mitchell County. However, this family persevered and kept this ranch intact for well over 100 years. The family is partitioning part of the ranch to keep by its family members, but is putting up for sale approximately 2,800 acres. Great hunting of whitetail deer, turkey, dove, quail, as well as hogs is among the many attributes of this ranch. Big Silver Creek meanders through the heart of the ranch from northeast to southwest creating a large area of bottom ground for excellent grazing and hunting. As mentioned, native americans were prevalent in this area for many years and evidence of this is found along Big Silver Creek with camp sites and indian artifacts such as arrow heads and points. Excellent views from the high points of the ranch on the north and south sides make for enjoyment of sunrises and sunsets.
