Halifax County - 10217 Bill Tuck Hwy, Virgilina, VA
Morris Creek Farm – A Historic 114.65-Acre Estate in Halifax County, VA
Step into a piece of Virginia’s rich agricultural history, originally known as Morris Creek Farm, on this breathtaking 114.65-acre estate offering unparalleled charm, functionality, and natural beauty. Nestled in the heart of Halifax County, this property presents an extraordinary opportunity to own a historic working farm featuring two homes, multiple outbuildings, two stocked ponds, river access, and a legacy of self-sufficient farming dating back to the Great Depression.
The Main Home – A 1937 Craftsman-Style Farmhouse
Built in 1937 by the owner’s grandfather and skilled local tradesmen, the stunning craftsman-style main farmhouse is a testament to superior craftsmanship and historic character. His father was considered one of the wealthiest men in the area, and thus, how this beautiful home was built during the depression with no corners being cut. The home features original 1937 Bogalusa oak flooring throughout, complemented by heart pine floors in the upstairs rooms. Large farmhouse windows allow natural light to pour in, highlighting the exquisite handcrafted solid wood doors. The beadboard porch ceilings have been freshly painted in traditional haint blue to pay homage to their Southern heritage. And the beadboard pantry once used to shelve canned vegetables from the garden is now repurposed for a convenient laundry room just steps from the kitchen, bathroom, and back porch entry with a mud-sink.
There are several original 1937 light fixtures throughout the house blended with new modern light fixtures and ceiling fans to create a modern twist on this original farmhouse. Numerous other modern updates enhance the primary home’s timeless appeal, including a new metal roof installed in 2023, new stainless steel kitchen appliances installed in 2024, and new heat pumps for both levels (also added in 2024). A tankless electric water heater and an updated 200-amp electrical service, both installed in 2024, ensure energy efficiency. The bathroom’s new toilet, sink, and plumbing were added in 2024. The tub is original to 1948. And the entire interior has been freshly repainted with Sherwin Williams Emerald paint, creating a bright and welcoming atmosphere. While the fireplace is no longer vented, buyers have the option to add electric or gas logs to suit their preferences. High-speed internet is available via Empower at Highway 58, or Starlink can provide great rural connectivity.
The “Original” Second Home & Working Sawmill
A secondary home, once owned by the original family and dating pre-1937, accompanies the property, offering additional living space for guests, farmhands, or rental potential. The farm has a long history of milling its own lumber, with an on-site sawmill that was operational until recently. This sawmill played a crucial role in processing trees from the front farm and chestnut trees from the orchard after a storm, making it a unique and valuable feature for anyone interested in woodworking or farm infrastructure.
Farmstead Legacy & Outbuildings
Morris Creek Farm, named in the 1980s, was once a thriving tobacco farm and remains a haven for livestock, hunting, and sustainable living. A pre-1937 tobacco barn stands as a testament to the farm’s storied past, having been used for curing tobacco through the 1950s. Additional outbuildings include a smokehouse, corn crib, pack house with a loft, tractor shed, and toolshed with a loft. All outbuildings are original to the 1937 farm, beyond the original homeplace (secondary residence) and tobacco barn. A hay shed used for switchgrass (a native grass that is naturally drought resistant) production adds to the farm’s agricultural potential. A newer tobacco barn, previously used for oil storage, is also part of the property’s rich infrastructure.
Land & Natural Features
The property boasts two spring-fed stocked ponds, established in 1978 and 1992, filled with bass, catfish, sunfish, and more. The farm provides river access to the Hyco River via the US Army Corps land surrounding the river and nearby Kerr Lake, making it an ideal spot for fishing, camping, and outdoor recreation. With 2.5 miles of high-tensile fencing installed in 1990, the farm was well-equipped for raising Gelbvieh and Angus cattle, further showcasing its agricultural viability. Fertile farmland, once home to orchards, livestock, and abundant gardens, remains primed for various agricultural pursuits.
Proximity & Nearby Attractions
Conveniently located equidistant to Clarksville and South Boston, VA, Morris Creek Farm offers easy access to both rural charm and modern conveniences. It is just 1 hour and 15 minutes from Raleigh, NC, making it perfect for commuters working in the Research Triangle Park. The property is also minutes from multiple boat landings on Kerr Lake (Buggs Island), Occoneechee State Park, and Buffalo Creek, providing excellent opportunities for water recreation. Nearby Buffalo Springs is known for its historic healing Lithia water, adding to the area’s unique appeal.
The vibrant town centers of Clarksville and South Boston offer lakeside dining, wineries, breweries, and annual festivals such as the Clarksville Wine Festival and Lakefest. South Boston’s thriving arts scene includes street festivals, outdoor concerts, and the esteemed Prizery arts center. A short drive to Danville, VA, grants access to the Virginia International Raceway (VIR) and the new Caesar’s casino, adding to the recreational options available.

Discover Old Moonshine Stills Along “Shootin’ Creek”: If Franklin County, Virginia was the so-called “Moonshine Capital” of the world during Prohibition in the 1920’s, then Shootin’ Creek – located in the southwest corner of the county – might qualify as the “Moonshine Capital” of Franklin County. In T. Keister Greer’s book, “THE GREAT MOONSHINE CONSPIRACY TRIAL OF 1935,” he mentions Shootin’ Creek no less than eight times as a center of moonshining and revenuer raids. One revenue agent testified to cutting up more than 30 moonshine stills at Shootin’ Creek in a space of 90 days.
