History
The history of Abe's goes back over 60 years to 1958. When Abe and Patsy Chavez pioneered a masterpiece which was able to accommodate anglers with all they would need. Abe and Patsy moved to Navajo Dam & started their business before the dam was built and dedicated in 1962. They each have deep family roots in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado with family histories dating back several hundred years. The young couple provided services to the dam construction workers and later to fishermen and sportsmen visiting the San Juan. Once the dam was completed in 1962 the San Juan River became one of the finest trout fishing resources in the country.
Rainbow and Brown trout were stocked in the San Juan following the construction of the dam. The low water temperatures, typically low 40's near the dam, clear water and abundant trout food sources made the San Juan River into a fabulous fishery. During the 1960's it became clear that the San Juan would be a very special place therefore, the State of New Mexico set aside about 3.5 miles of river immediately below the dam as Quality Water. Today this is the Special Trout Water section in the NM Fishing Proclamation.
As Abe's grew, the needs of sportsmen continued including a Motel, Grocery store, RV park, Fishing Guide services, Boat Storage, Restaurant and Lounge . Their business prospered and became a popular family business with each of their children working in the fishing business.
Their love and passion for people, family and fishing was evident in their hospitality and dedication. Abe's has hosted world renown fishers and photographers from around the world. The rich history and love that is a part of Abe's Motel and Fly Shop will continue to grace and bless the hands of the new owner.
Location
It has been said that trout only live in beautiful places. The San Juan River that flows through the high desert of Northern New Mexico only offers credence to the quote. From its humble origin high on the snow-capped peaks of the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, its crystal clear waters tumble and cascade down remote canyons and rocky mountainsides, until it is gathered and harnessed in its impoundment of Navajo Lake, straddling the border of two great western states. The release from deep behind the high walls of the dam that hold these waters in restraint and issue forth gin clear, highly oxygenated, and nutrient rich, provide a perfect habitat for the trout below. It is a place that fly fishermen dream about, when they dream about places to fish.
If it only offered beautiful, healthy fish that number in the thousands, then the San Juan would be enough to earn its accolades as one of the top destinations to fish in the U.S. But there are more; far more, reasons that make this river a Mecca for trout fishermen the world over. Its broad flats, interspersed with deep pools, runs, tailouts, and eddies, make it one of the most wade-friendly rivers in the West. The predictable and controlled consistent flows also create a tailwater fishery that is a pleasure to float by driftboat, without encountering anything beyond intermediate class waters, unlike many other well known western rivers.
And then there is the scenerymiles of it. Picture gin clear water flowing between the bluffs of high mesas, dotted with pinon pine and juniper, changing in color as the sun makes its arc through a bluebird New Mexico sky. Picture the home of ospreys, eagles, and great blue herons along the banks of a river in the high desert, lined with giant cottonwoods and willows. Picture the home of mule deer, elk, river otters, beaver, coyotes, and mountain lions. Picture all of this; if you can, and when the sun begins to sink behind a spectacular horizon and the sky begins to fill with deep hues of reds, pinks, and yellows that turn the ochre buttes and bluffs into a remarkable natural light show, you will know why they call this river and its surroundings The Land of Enchantment.

Have you ever dreamed of slipping the surly bonds of the city and escaping to a simpler, more grounded life on a farmonly to be stopped short by the fear of a steep learning curve? Lake Valley Pecan Farm might be the solution youre looking for.
Nestled in the foothills of New Mexicos Black Range Mountains, Lake Valley Pecan Farm is an established, turnkey pecan orchard offering ease of operation and peace of mind. A fully automated drip irrigation and fertilization system keeps the trees healthy with minimal oversight, while pruning, harvesting, and processing are outsourced to experienced professionals. A federal crop insurance program provides a guaranteed income floor to help mitigate risks from weather or market fluctuations. For the past 20 years, the farm has been managed part-time by its current ownerwithout employees. All essential equipment is included in the sale.
The farm encompasses 115 acres, with 64 acres under irrigation with perfected water rights. Currently, the farm is using less than half of its allocated water rights which allows the balance to be used for potential expansion or other enterprises. The main residence is a charming, 110-year-old adobe home that is move-in ready yet full of potential for a creative renovation. Additional structures include a large two-story barn with horse stalls and a riding arena, a metal shop, an equipment storage shed, and a guesthouse. The property offers easy highway access, a private well, and high-speed gigabit fiber-optic internet.
Farming first came to Lake Valley around 1000 years ago with the Mogollon people who left maps of their farms etched in the rocks of the surrounding hills. Ruben McEvers was the first to homestead the farm back in 1875. He formed a farm out of the wilderness and still found time to prospect for silver and fight Apaches. Ruben is best known for discovering a silver vein which sparked a mining boom and a town named after his farm.
Eventually, the Apaches were just too much, even for Ruben and others took up the work he began. They came from different backgrounds and with different technology, but they all had the same guiding spirit. That spirit isnt about conquering the landbecause the land cannot be conquered. If thats your aim, this isnt your place. Instead, it is a spirit of being in a relationship with the land, of knowing when to give and when to take. That may sound contrived but ask any old farmer or rancher around here and they will tell you that it is true and it has been true for all time. Yes, Lake Valley Pecan Farm is a profitable business in a beautiful location but that is half of the story. It is a place of growth, not just for plants and animals, but for the people who live here as well.

Welcome to the San Juan, De Herrera Farm and Recreational property.
This amazing property is located approximately 6 miles downstream from Navajo Lake State Park and Dam. The San Juan River below the Dam is among the most prestigious trout fishing waters in North America and is ranked a USA Top-10 Fly Fishing Destination. Water released from the bottom of the dam is stable, clear, cold and rich in nutrients. The abundant flora within the river bottom creates an ideal environment for insect proliferation, which in turn supports one of America's most prolific river trout populations, both in terms of quantity and size. Downstream from the dam itself is a 3.75 mile "Special Trout Water Section" where only the use of flies and artificial lures with a single barbless hook can be used and all trout caught must be immediately returned to the water.
The DeHerrera Farm is 34+ acres overall with approximately 7 acres of irrigated grass pasture for grazing seasonal livestock. Irrigation water is provided via the Bloomfield Irrigation Ditch system. All water rights of record will convey with the property. The remaining acreage is typical of a plush New Mexico river bottom and consists of large cottonwood trees, natural grasses and several large river fed ponds. Perimeter and cross fencing with locked gates are in very good condition. Roads within the property are dirt surface and two track in general.
If hunting Elk, Trophy Mule Deer, Turkey, Geese and Ducks are your passion as well, this property has it all! The large ponds with plenty of cover hold the waterfowl year round. The irrigated pasture and natural grass within the cottonwoods provide plenty of grazing, cover and shade for the Elk, Mule Deer and Turkey. Located in Game Unit 2A which is known for Trophy sized Mule Deer of 170"-200"+ and a very respectable local elk population. The farm has historically received one Mule Deer Landowner Tag each year. Archery hunters may choose one of two hunts, September or January. The farm is enrolled in the E-PLus Elk program and is within the Secondary Management Zone which provides for "Unlimited" Ranch Only Landowner Tags which may be purchased online or over the counter. Hunters may choose Archery, Muzzle Loader or Rifle seasons for Bull or Cow. All Waterfowl and Turkey licenses may be obtained online or over the counter for their respective seasons as well.
Here's your opportunity to purchase a true sportsman's paradise. Imagine camping under the shade of the Cottonwoods in full fall colors, casting a line anywhere on the San Juan River, early mornings in the duck blind, letting an arrow fly toward that trophy mule deer or majestic bull elk. Perhaps trailer the boat or Jet Skis to Navajo Lake for a day on the water with family and friends. Year round recreation all within a few miles!
