Lincoln County - Hondo, NM
Nestled in the foothills of the Sacramento Mountains between Sierra Blanca and Capitan lies a hunting ranch of mythic proportionsa place where the spirit of the Old West is still very much alive. Alamo Canyon Hunting Ranch encompasses 2,064± pristine acres, a vast, untamed high desert ranch that elk, mule deer, Aoudad, lion, bear, turkey, quail, fox, and coyotes call home amongst the canyons and craggy ridges. This is a land that calls to the adventurer, the hunter, the one who seeks both solitude and the thrill of the chase.
Alamo Canyon is not merely a ranch; its a testament to the enduring frontier spirit. The ranch is secluded, far removed from the clamor of modern life. It is a place where time seems to stand still, where the land and the wildlife are as they were when the first pioneers ventured westward.
A Wilderness Untamed
The ranch is a mosaic of diverse terrains, from rolling hills blanketed in native grasses to rugged canyons carved by ancient waters. The landscape is dotted with junipers and pion pines, their twisted trunks bearing witness to the relentless forces of nature. Vast expanses of open land provide breathtaking views of the Sacramento Mountains, their jagged peaks standing sentinel over the ranch.
Wildlife roam freely across these acres, their presence a reminder of the wild abundance that once defined the American West. For the hunter, there is no greater challenge than tracking a majestic bull elk through the dense brush or spotting a wily trophy mule deer amid the rocky outcroppings. The Barbary sheep, with their sweeping horns and agile grace, offer a pursuit that is both demanding and exhilarating.
But the game on Alamo Canyon does not stop there. Black bears prowl the shadows of the ridges, their powerful forms a humbling sight for those fortunate enough to catch a glimpse. Mountain lions, the elusive ghosts of the high desert, stalk silently through the juniper forests. Foxes and coyotes add to the symphony of the night, their cries echoing across the canyons. Wild turkeys strut through the sagebrush, their feathers glistening in the morning sun, while quail flit and scatter at the slightest sound.
Water: The Lifeblood of the Ranch
Water is the true treasure of the high desert, and at Alamo Canyon, it has been harnessed with both ingenuity and respect for the land. Two wells tap into the hidden aquifers deep beneath the earth, one reaching down Approximately 150 feet, drawing forth the cool, clear water that sustains life on the ranch. This precious resource is stored in two tanks, one holding 6,000 gallons and the other 2,500 gallons, perched high on the ridges, a mile and a half from the wells themselves.
Once these tanks are filled, the water flows back down through an intricate network of gravity-fed lines, reaching eight tire drinkers, each with a capacity of 700 to 750 gallons. These drinkers, strategically placed throughout the ranch, provide essential hydration for the diverse wildlife that call this place home. In addition to the tire drinkers, there are smaller bird drinkers scattered across the property, ensuring that even the smallest of the ranchs inhabitants have access to water.
Three 2,000-pound feeders stand sentinel over the ranch, surrounded by sturdy corrals, ready to sustain the game during the leaner months. Four smaller 200-pound feeders and two spinner feeders add to the bounty, distributing nourishment across the land. The feeders and drinkers are more than just conveniences; they are a testament to the stewardship that the ranch embodies, a commitment to maintaining the delicate balance between man and nature.
A Landscape Etched by Hand and Time
Over 36,000 feet of inch-and-a-quarter poly pipe snake across the property, a lifeline connecting the scattered drinkers and feeders to the central tanks. It is a feat of engineering that speaks to the dedication of those who have worked this land, carving out a sustainable habitat in a harsh and unforgiving environment.
But the ranchs infrastructure does not end with water. More than 20 miles of trails wind through the property, carved into the rugged terrain with care and precision. These trails are a gateway to the ranchs many hidden corners, leading hunters to the perfect blind, or explorers to a secluded vista where the vastness of the desert stretches out before them.
Six deer blinds, each designed for two-person occupancy, are strategically placed throughout the ranch. These blinds offer unparalleled views of the surrounding terrain, providing both concealment and comfort for those who seek the thrill of the hunt. From these perches, hunters can watch as the sun rises over the Sacramento Mountains, casting long shadows across the land, or wait patiently as dusk settles, when the wildlife stirs from the brush.
A Legacy of Water and Stone
Water is not only brought to the land by modern means; it springs naturally from the earth as well. A rock tank, fed by a reliable spring, has been a source of life on the ranch for generations. In the last five years, it has only run dry oncea testament to its dependability. Nearby, a man-made dirt tank adds to the ranchs water resources, capable of being filled from the same lines that feed the main storage tanks. These tanks are more than just water sources; they are oases in the desert, places where life gathers, drawn by the promise of sustenance.
The Soul of the Ranch
Alamo Canyon is more than just a place; it is an experience, a step back into a time when the West was still wild, and mans relationship with the land was defined by respect and resilience. It is a place where the modern and the ancient coexist, where the call of a coyote breaks the quiet of the night.
To own a piece of Alamo Canyon is to own a piece of the West itselfa land where legends are made, and the spirit of adventure is ever present. It is a place where the hunter can test his skill against some of the most challenging game in North America, where the naturalist can revel in the beauty and diversity of the high desert, and where the rancher can find solace in the stewardship of a truly remarkable property.
The Lodge
The current owners of the ranch embarked on the construction of a magnificent steel lodge that assures minimal annual maintenance and provides all the luxuries desired for a home and entertainment showplace. The entrance to the headquarters area alone provides the owner/visitor a clear testament to the pride of ownership exhibited on the entire property. The pre-engineered steel framing of the lodge encompasses a living quarters consisting of approximately 4,000 square feet. The living area includes 4 bedrooms, 5 baths, a large full kitchen/dining area, a full-service laundry room, and a large game room. There is an additional 2,400 heated square feet of entertainment and equipment storage area that includes a large walk-in gun safe work area and tool storage area for performing maintenance needs of the equipment used on the ranch. Rounding out the lodge are portals for enjoying the serene sounds of wildlife, along with a full outdoor kitchen and entertainment area that can be enclosed for any type of inclement weather, including high winds. The lodge really is a tremendous structural improvement, complimenting the ranch and its many uses.
The Location

These towns include medical services, educational services, shopping, entertainment, and restaurants. The ranch itself is accessed via county-maintained caliche and gravel Alamo Canyon Road.

Lincoln County - San Patricio, NM
Nestled in the hills above the Rio Ruidoso and Rio Bonito, the Hurd Wild West Ranch offers a rare chance to own land shaped by history, beauty, and legacy. Originally part of the renowned Sentinel Ranch, founded by famed Southwestern artist Peter Hurd and his wife Henriette Wyeth, this 1,625± acre parcel reflects the same rugged landscapes that inspired their work. With ties to Lincoln County’s Wild West past and a timeless artistic heritage, this is more than land—it’s a story waiting to be continued.
Southwestern artist Peter Hurd was born in Roswell, NM in 1904. After studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and apprenticing under N.C. Wyeth, he married Wyeth’s daughter, Henriette, in 1929. They returned to southern New Mexico, purchasing 40 acres in San Patricio. Over time, they expanded the property to more than 2,000 acres, calling it Sentinel Ranch.
Inspired by the terrain of hilly plains and arroyos of the Hondo Valley, Peter’s work often depicted the landscapes and people of the region—highlighting the rich rural life he cherished. He traded paintings for services and embedded himself in the local community. The setting allowed both Peter and Henriette to build a family and legacy rooted in the land and their art.
Peter passed in 1984. Today, their youngest son, Michael Hurd, oversees the family ranch, Sentinel Ranch, part of which lies north of U.S. 70 and is the subject property offered for sale. While the parcel is centered in San Patricio, it lays within literal and artistic proximity to the Hondo Valley—the downstream confluence of the Rio Bonito and Rio Ruidoso which forms the Rio Hondo

Lincoln County - 1086 Alamo Canyon Rd, San Patricio, NM
Nearly 8,000 total acres adjacent to national forest & the Mescalero Apache Reservation
Trophy elk hunting with unlimited landowner elk tags
Mule deer, bear, turkey, & more
Excellent hunting & cattle ranch
Located 45 minutes from the resort town of Ruidoso
Wapiti, the Native American term for North American elk, is the namesake of a sprawling 8,000-acre tract of foothills property near Ruidoso, New Mexico. Wapiti Ranch is named for elk for a good reason: it lies near the heart of an entire elk nation that boasts some of the largest bull elk on the planet. Having the good fortune of bordering the Mescalero Apache Reservation, which is renowned for its trophy bulls, Wapiti Ranch has earned an excellent reputation as a hunting operation that has treated many of its clients to the largest bull elk of their lives. Now this turnkey operation is on the market, ready to be assumed by new owners to carry on stewardship of this proud trophy-elk legacy.
Wapiti Ranch occupies almost 8,000 hilly acres on the eastern flank of the Sacramento Mountains in south-central New Mexico comprised of approximately 6,686 deeded acres and 1,280 acres of New Mexico State leased land. This well-blocked ranch is approximately 3 miles wide and 4 miles long and encompasses several drainages from 6,000 to 7,000 feet. Summers are cool and winters are mild. The western border is the Lincoln National Forest, and the southern border is the Mescalero Apache Reservation. Two leased tracts of state land are located within the boundaries of the property. Located at the end of a county road, the ranch is extremely privateperfect for both elk and hunters. Vegetation throughout includes meadows, ponderosa pine, and extensive pion pine and juniper forests. Water sources are developed throughout the property.
The elk of Wapiti Ranch are undisputedly exceptional. With free access to and from the trophy-managed Mescalero Apache Reservation, these herds are managed for quality. Bulls scoring 300 to 330 points are common, with larger animals in the 350+ range possible every year. Hunting-wise, Wapiti Ranch also benefits from unlimited landowner elk licenses on the property for both the archery season in September and the any-weapon season from October through December. Two mule deer tags have historically been issued to the ranch annually and bear and turkey tags available over the counter.
To state that Wapiti Ranch is well-situated as a big-game operation would be an understatement. Careful stewardship has maintained wildlife habitat of the highest quality, so in addition to elk, mule deer, black bears, mountain lions, coyotes, bobcats, and turkeys thrive here. Decades of satisfied hunters have taken large animals on this land, and the ranch comes with a client list and well-experienced guides and staff, ready to carry on the proud tradition of Wapiti Ranch.
On some ranches, hunting supplements a cattle operation; at Wapiti Ranch, the situation is reversed. The ranch has historically supported roughly 100 head, including 5 bulls for breeding. All improvements necessary for maintaining the ranching operation are included.
Ranch headquarters consists of a well-maintained, fully furnished ranch house with four bedrooms, two baths, and a stone fireplace. The original 1920 homestead still stands as well, lending a nod to its rich ranching heritage. Several other outbuildings and cattle-handling equipment round out the functional facilities available at the headquarters.
Ruidoso, one of southern New Mexico's prime tourist destinations, lies about 45 minutes away via county roads and U.S. Highway 70. Ruidoso is a popular resort offering fishing, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, paddleboarding, and a mountain coaster. Restaurants are abundant, and the Spencer Theater for the Performing Arts hosts live performances year-round. For those inclined to try their luck, the Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort and Ruidoso Downs Racetrack will happily accept your wagers. The nearest regional airport is in Roswell, about 45 minutes to the east. Roswell has a hospital, full services, and its famous UFO Museum.
Some hunting operations must be built from the ground up, and others are available on a silver platter. Wapiti Ranch is solidly in the second category. If a world-class big-game business is in your sights, take serious aim at Wapiti Ranch, a proven turnkey operation just waiting for you to take the reins.

20,000+ FOREST LEASE
3460+ FREE USE ACRES
30,990+ TOTAL ACRES
TERRAIN AND VEGETATION: The terrain on the ranch is mostly rolling hills, with some mountains and canyons on the property. The elevation ranges from around 6500 to 7000. You can find Cedar, Juniper and a few pines on the ranch. The cover runs from fairly thick to open rolling plains. The grasses are mainly gramma grass with some galleta.
WATER: There are currently seven working wells on the ranch that supply water via a pipeline system throughout the ranch. There is also one well on the northwest side of the ranch that has been drilled and waiting to be hooked up. The depth of the wells range from 350 deep to 600 deep and are strong wells put out between 5 gpm and 15 gpm. The pipeline on the ranch is mainly poly with one line east of the house that is PVC. Along the pipeline system there are around 8 to 10 storage tanks of 10,000 gallons or more each, as well as 25 or more drinkers. There are also 25 to 30 dirt tanks that hold water most of the time.
LIVESTOCK OPERATION: Currently, the owner is running around 400 hd of pairs and bulls and will usually carry over 80 head of heifers to breed. Although there is a forest on the ranch, it is a very forgiving country, and the cattle can easily access the grass.
IMPROVEMENTS: There is a very well maintained owners home with Two bedroom, Two bath. There is also a hired hand home that is Two-bedroom, One bath. At the headquarters there is a metal two bay shop, a large haybarn, and some outbuildings. The jewel at the headquarters is a newly constructed insulated foaling shed, a new metal haybarn, with two different sets of covered stalls and runs on them. If that isn't enough, there is a roping arena with a return alley. When you go around the ranches 12 pastures you will find working corrals in all of them. When branding time comes, you can work the cattle right where they are. This is a very easy-to-work ranch.
WILDLIFE: When we say wildlife, we really mean wildlife. The ranch boasts a resident heard of elk with many large bulls. Mule deer are abundant on the ranch as well as antelope and barbary sheep. Then there is the usual run of quail, dove, bear, lion and coyote. If you or your friends are hunters, this ranch is for you. There is also the potential income from selling hunts.
There is also a conservation easement on the ranch. This will guarantee you a quiet ranching and hunting lifestyle for many years to come. There are a few acres that are not included in the conservation easement. In one of these such areas is a gravel pit where the owners have just signed a new five-year lease agreement that has been paying around $100,000 a year. With this and hunting leases it makes a large income besides the cattle income. Other upsides to the ranch income, a CSP program on the ranch that will pay $65,000 next year and a $125,000 tree thinning program to be done as soon as money is available.
