History
Elbert HistoryA Brief History: Farming, Railroads, and Community
Elbert is a quaint prairie town located south of Kiowa on Elbert Road. The community was first settled around 1860 in the valley of Kiowa Creek. Originally known as Gomer's Gulchnamed for Gomer's Sawmillthe town was made up of a post office, stores, gambling halls, and saloons. Later, the town was relocated slightly downstream and renamed Elbert.
In the 1880s, the Denver and New Orleans Railroad (later the Colorado and Southern Railroad) extended a line from Denver to Pueblo, with Elbert as one of its stops. The town grew quickly and, at its height, featured three large mercantile stores (including the Russell Gates Mercantile Company), two banks, a post office, two creameries, two hotels, and a wide range of businesses typical of a thriving prairie community.
Today, Elbert retains much of its historic charm. The Presbyterian Church, built in 1889, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Russell Gates Mercantile Building, constructed in 1906, now serves as a community gathering place and is being lovingly restored by the Elbert Woman's Club. The Sacred Heart Catholic Church has been carefully restored, the old post office now houses a caf, the Elbert Mercantile has become the South Forty Saloon, and the old lumber shed is home to City Limit Antiques & Reclaimed Materials. More recent additions include the Dancing Wolf Gallery, A Cowgirl's Heart Boutique and Gallery, Colorado Green Houses, and the offices of Kamerzell Brothers Well & Pump Service.
Location
Perfectly located in the heart of Elbert, this home is walking distance to the K12 school, local restaurants, and antique shopping. Just 30 minutes to Colorado Springs, Castle Rock, or Parker, and an easy commute to Denver. Enjoy small-town charm with big-city amenities close by.

History
Elizabeth, Colorado, began in 1855 as a sawmill camp called Russellville along Running Creek. Gold was discovered in 1858, sparking a minor rush, but flooding forced relocation to its current site. Named after Elizabeth Gray Kimbark Hubbard, sister-in-law of Territorial Governor John Evans, the town was platted in 1882 and incorporated in 1890 with a population of 300. Early economic activities included logging, ranching, and dairy farming. The Denver & New Orleans Railroad, established in 1881, boosted growth. By 1901, Elizabeth had businesses, churches, and a school. Economic challenges hit in the 1920s, worsened by the 1930s Depression and a 1935 flood that ended rail service. The town remained a small, stable community, transitioning to a bedroom community by the late 20th century due to growth in nearby Denver and Colorado Springs. Today, with a 2020 population of 1,675, Elizabeth preserves its historic Main Street while managing suburban expansion.
Location
Elizabeth, Colorado, is located in Elbert County, approximately 45 miles southeast of Denver and 35 miles northeast of Colorado Springs, along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. Situated at an elevation of about 6,500 feet, it lies on the high plains with rolling hills, grasslands, and pockets of ponderosa pine forests. The town is centered along Colorado Highway 86, with Cherry Creek and Running Creek nearby, shaping its scenic, rural landscape. Elizabeth serves as a small commercial hub for surrounding ranches and farms, with a historic downtown featuring shops and community spaces, while its proximity to major cities makes it a growing bedroom community.
